“The Lord lives! Praise be to my Rock! Exalted be God my Savior!” – Psalm 18:46
There is power in praise. Much power. Wonder-working power.
When we acknowledge God for who He is by speaking or singing of His many attributes, we invite His supernatural provision into our lives. The Bible is filled with story after story of how God intervened in miraculous ways when the people raised their voices to Him in praise. One of my favorite accounts is told in 2 Chronicles 20.
King Jehoshaphat received word that a vast army was coming to attack his land. Immediately, the king called for a fast for all of Judah, and the people cried out to God and worshiped him.
The night before they were going to fight their enemies, the king said, “You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you (20:17).”
The next morning, as they set out, Jehoshaphat appointed men to sing to the Lord and proclaim, “Give thanks to the Lord, for his love endures forever.” As they began to praise, the Lord set ambushes against the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir who were invading Judah. As a result, the enemies of the Israelites were soundly defeated.
What a great example to follow! Instead of being paralyzed by fear, King Jehoshaphat turned to the Lord for help. He didn’t dwell on the details of his situation or get caught up in the “what ifs.” Instead, Jehoshaphat’s confidence was in the Lord. Likewise, when we take time to praise the Lord, even in the most difficult circumstances, we can experience the joy, peace, and victory He has for us.
Let’s take time today to declare the greatness of our God. He is Elohay Tehilati, the God of our praise!
