“The LORD is with me; he is my helper.” – Psalm 118:7
The intersection was dangerous. Located at the bottom of a very steep hill, it was especially treacherous in the winter. It always made me nervous to drive it when the roads were icy. This particular day, I was extra careful because I’d been in an accident in the same spot not less than a year earlier.
As I drove the snow-covered road and approached the stoplight, I lightly pumped the brakes to slow down. However, my wheels hit a patch of black ice, and I lost control of the car. We started sliding toward the vehicle in front of us, which was waiting at a red light. There was nothing I could do to stop our momentum. When I saw that a collision was inevitable, I thought, Oh, no. Not again! Then, I cried out, “Jesus, help me!” As soon as the words left my lips, our car hit a patch of dry ground and came to a sudden halt. Had I not prayed in that moment of desperation, I’m sure the girls and I would have crashed.
Psalm 118:7 says God is always with us. Deuteronomy 31:6 makes it clear he will never leave us nor forsake us. Therefore, we can be assured that during times of trouble, God our Helper stands ready to act on our behalf. However, in order to experience his divine deliverance, we have to ask for his help. We have to trust him enough to call upon his name.
Have you ever had an experience in which you knew the Lord intervened in a supernatural way? If so, go back to that place in your mind and remember. Relive the awe and wonder you felt at God’s provision. Thank the Lord again for helping you and for the countless other times for which you aren’t even aware. Our God is indeed mighty to save. Take a few moments right now to praise him for the help he gives you every day. He is worthy!
