On this fast, are coffee and popcorn okay? We get custom roasted coffee beans from our daughter's roastery. I pop corn on the stove, not the microwave, using 1 — 2 Tablespoons of canola oil for 1/4 cup kernels.
By the way, if you enjoy the highest quality coffee, lemme know and I'll put you in contact with Dominic Coffee, our son-in-law and daughter's business.
You're not gonna like this, but caffeine is one of the restricted foods! So now coffee for 3 weeks! Whole grains are allowed, so I believe the corn kernels would be ok.
I would take you up on the coffee offer, but Justin and I don't drink it at all. But, I'll keep it in mind for a gift idea. My parents both drink it. :)
Hey, Paul. I just saw that I had a typo on this reply, putting "now coffee" instead of "no coffee!" I hope I didn't steer you wrong because I didn't mean to tell you to drink coffee on the Daniel Fast. Oops.
Hey is Organic Apple Cider vinegar ok? And the Tofu that I purchased is organic, but it has magnesium chloride. This is the first time I have done the Daniel-fast, or any type of fast for that matter. I need a miracle. Thank you, and God Bless you!
Thanks for your comment. I am glad you are doing the Daniel Fast, too! God will bless you as you seek Him.
About apple cider vinegar - this is kind of a gray area with the Daniel Fast.
Apple cider vinegar is a type of vinegar made by the fermentation of apple cider. During this process, sugar in the apple cider is broken down by bacteria and yeast into alcohol and then into vinegar. Apple cider vinegar contains acetic acid (like other types of vinegar) and some lactic, citric and malic acids.
Technically, it would not be a "Food To Eat" on the Daniel Fast. However, many people decide to modify their fasts a bit, and you should do whatever the Lord is leading you to do. I don't think your fast will be ineffective if you use a little bit of vinegar, as long as you can do so with a clear conscience! :)
The most important thing to remember is not to get hung up on every thing we should and shouldn't eat, so that we miss the whole purpose of fasting: to draw near to God and worship Him.
I pray that this helps. May the Lord bless you in mighty ways as you honor Him!
Hi! I love the site. I was wondering if veggie cheese and soy milk are ok?
My church has decided to do the Daniel Fast which started on Jan. 4 2010. I have fasted before but for one or two days only. I want this to be all about God and gaining a deeper relationship with him but I can not seem to stop thinking about how hungrey I am all the time. I have printed a lot of recipies and have tried some of them but nothing can seem to take the hunger away. It is almost like my mind set is not where it needs to be. I keep thinking about the foods I am craving and can't have and how hungry I am but at the same time I want to be able to do this 100% and be happy to do it. When I have fasted before I had a question or a personal reason and it would be answered quickly, but with the pastor asking us to do it I am having a hard time during prayer and on focusing on the reason for the fast. Any sugestions?
Hi, serenity23. I'm glad you checked out the blog! Thanks for your comment!
Yes, soymilk is allowed. However, be sure to check the ingredients. You want the unsweetened kind. I have Westsoy organic unsweetened soymilk at home, and all it has is soybeans and filtered water. Other options are almond milk and rice milk.
I pray that God will bless you in mighty ways as you seek Him on your fast.
To "Anonymous" who posted on January 6th about struggling with constant hunger during this fast, will you email me so I can send you a private message? Thanks.
What about soy milk?
Soy milk is fine, as long as it doesn't contain added sugar. Be sure to read the label. One brand I use is unsweetened Westsoy, which is only organic soybeans and filtered water. Thanks for your question!
Serenity, I just realized I didn't reply to your question about veggie cheese. What are the ingredients in it?
Veggie cheese, unless it is VEGAN often has casein, which is a milk protein. Thus this cheese still has some dairy.
There are vegan options as cheese replacements but these are a highly processed product. Not really "whole grain" of cheese.
It is time to identify what you are not willing to give up? Cheese? - Don't worry for true "cheese" lovers when you taste this it will not be a "replacement". If Cheese is your hang up - it's time to let it go.
I was wondering if Tostitos 100% white corn tortilla chips were ok to eat?
I just checked out the ingredients:
Whole White Corn, Vegetable Oil (contains One or More of the Following: Corn, Sunflower, or Soybean Oil)Salt.
Looks ok to me! Another option is Baked Tostitos.
Thanks for your question! I pray that the Lord will continue to strengthen and bless you as you seek Him!
I found organic coffee today. Would it be ok?
No, caffeine of any kind, organic or not, is not allowed on the Daniel Fast. Thanks for your question, though. I'm sure that's not the answer you were hoping to get! ;)
Hi I love this site, and it is really helping me! But im wondering can we have bread, or 100 % juice, and also what is your suggestion to me as far as when to read certain scriptures?
Thanks for your comment. I'm glad the blog is helpful on your fast.
Yeast is restricted, so regular bread is not allowed on the Daniel Fast. However, you may have unleavened bread. You can either make your own, or buy it. French Meadow Bakery sells a few types of bread without yeast (most health food stores will carry it).
Fruit juices are allowed, as long as they are 100% juice with no sweeteners. Fresh juices, such as those made with a juicer, are encouraged!
To answer your question about WHEN to read Scripture...my suggestion is to read first thing in the morning for sure, just to start your day with your mind focused on the Lord and His Word. Read as much as you can during the day. Even if you're not able to sit down and actually read the Bible because you're at work or in class or just running around, be intentional about meditating on God's promises. Pray spontaneously and continually throughout the day.
I hope this helps. Thanks for your comment and questions. May God bless you richly as you seek Him!
Hi =] I came upon your blog and I have started the Daniel fast... I was reading your "About Me" and wow it has confirmed that yes I can do this and yes just by the end of the day God showed me what I am to do and what are his plans ... Love your Blog!!!!
Thanks so much for your comment! How is your fast going? I pray that God does amazing things in your heart and life as you seek Him. Remember, you CAN do all things through Christ who gives you strength (Phil 4:13) and God will complete what He has started in YOU (Phil 1:6)!
I have a container of Earth Balance which is a vegan butter substitute... I read the ingredients and after much Googling to find out what "soy lecithin" is, I have concluded that it is Daniel Fast acceptable. Just in case anyone NEEDS butter while you're on the fast!
Thanks for the tip, Tray!
Are fruit juices OK? For instance, Juicy Juice (It says 100% fruit juice) I also have Cranberry-Grape juice (the brand "Northland")
Ingredients for the Cran-grape are: 100% juice from Apple, grape, cranberry, pear, juice concentrates (filtered water, juice concentrates), vegetable color, citric acid, natural flavors, fruit extracts, vitamin C, vitamin A palmtate, vitamin E acetate.
Juicy juice has basically the same ingredients, just with different fruits. I don't know what citric and absorbic acids are. And both juices say that they are pastuerized. Does that make any difference?
Also, is chewing gum on the "banned foods" list?
I'm not aware of any type of gym that would be allowed on the fast, simply because most gums are filled with sweeteners, softeners, colors, and other chemicals. Thanks for the question!
Yes, 100% fruit juices are ok. However, the label should only say, 100% juice. You want something that is pure and not from concentrate. Simply Orange makes orange juice and apple juice that would be allowed. The reason that Cran-grape and Juicy Juice wouldn't be allowed is because of the additives: vegetable colors, natural flavors, etc.
One thought is that you can make your own fresh fruit juices by buying a juicer. That's what I like to do. Then, you can make anything you want! And, I promise you that the flavor far exceeds what you can buy in the store. There are some fruit juice repices on the blog, if you're interested. Thanks for your question!
Hello, I was wondering what are some good sources of protein to have on this fast?
You might be surprised to learn that you will get a nice amount of protein by increasing your fruit and vegetable intake. Beans, nuts, seeds, and nut butters are also great sources of protein. Of course, if you are adventurous, there is always tofu! Quinoa is high in protein as well.
I hope that helps! Thanks for your question.
Are there any business men that do the Daniel Fast? What do you do if you are taking customer's out?
Hi, Steve! Yes, there are many businessmen around the world who do the Daniel Fast. Am I understanding your question correctly in that you are wondering what YOU are to do if you're taking customers out to eat who are NOT on the Daniel Fast? Just wanting you to clarify your situation a little more before I answer...
Thanks for posting your question as I'm sure it will help others as well.
Is cottonseed oil okay?
That's a great question. My first response was no. I've never seen cottonseed oil listed as a healthy oil. However, I thought I'd better do some research before answering.
Dr. William Sears, MD, ranks oils on his website (askdrsears.com) from the healthiest to the ones that are the worst for you. Cottonseed oil is considered among the top 3 in the "worst oils" category. Here is what he writes:
"Cottonseed oil is one of the most widely used oils, added to many processed foods, such as cereals and potato chips. It is relatively inexpensive and is readily available. Yet, it merits its place on our list of worst oils for several reasons. Cotton is a crop that is heavily sprayed with pesticides, so cottonseed oil may be loaded with pesticides. And, like tropical oils, cottonseed oil is low in monounsaturated fats and high in saturated fats. Also, cottonseed oils are likely to be hydrogenated to further extend its shelf life."
Anything that contains cottonseed oil is probably processed, since that is usually where we find it. Therefore, my advice would be to choose a healthier alternative oil, such as olive oil, and stay away from cottonseed oil.
I hope that helps. Is there a specific food you have a question about that contains cottonseed oil?
I happened upon this blog from the Mom Bloggers Club, and I love it! I had never heard of the Daniel Fast before, so I am really interested in this! Are there any books/publications or websites on this?
Thank you!
Okay, scratch that last question. I need to learn how to look at the sidebars! LOL!!
God Bless You Sister. Recently, I have been considering the Daniel Fast. I need God's hand to move in my life. I know that I cannot do it without Him. I know that I must demonstrate my willingness for God to work in me. At times I feel defeated; but, I will overcome because He is with me.
I have some detailed questions about the Daniel Fast. It is for 21 days whereas one seeks God in prayer and scripture. (with the listed food restrictions) Now, each fasting day starts at 6am and ends desirably at 6pm. During that time you refrain from eating like most traditional fasting. Is this description correct?
I have three daughters (ages 9, 7, and 3). I think following this fast together would be an excellent compliment to Daniel's story, which they've heard countless times in Sunday School and at home during family Bible time. Any specific suggestions for making this experience extra 'kid friendly?' =)
Yes, we have two daughters who are 6 and 4, so I can relate. Just wanted to thank you for your question. I will compile some ideas and post them here, hopefully later tonight. Thanks for visiting the blog and for your question!
Are you planning on having your kids follow the Daniel Fast 100%? If so, I would start by looking through the recipes on the blog and finding ones that you know your kids would like. Cook those recipes first! That way, they start off with a positive impression of the Daniel Fast.
I would also recommend having your children (especially the older two) help you in the food preparation process. I know my kids are much more likely to eat new food when they have a hand in making it.
You might also include the girls in selecting menu items. For example, you could say, "Which of these meals would you like for dinner (and list three that you have chosen)?" That allows them to take some ownership in the fast.
When we have done Daniel Fasts, our children ate what we ate. However, they couldn't follow it 100% because of snacks at school and church. However, I'd say they did 85% of the fast with us. It was good because it helped them to understand self-denial as an act of worship to God.
You might have them do the Daniel Fast for all meals but give them a little more freedom for snacks, allowing them to have cheese or other dairy products.
I hope this answers your question and gives you some ideas. I think that's great that you want to do the fast as a family. Let me know if you need more ideas.
God will honor your desire to seek Him through prayer and fasting, and I pray He will richly bless you as you humble yourself before Him.
This reply is in response to the question posted a few days ago by "Anonymous." The Daniel Fast is a 21-day fast, but it is a partial fast, meaning that you restrict your intake of certain foods as you seek the Lord through prayer. You can refer to the "foods to eat" and "foods to avoid" lists on my blog for more detailed information. I hope that answers your question! If not, please email me. Thanks for your comment!
Hi love its the firt time for me to have the actual food that someone can use in Daniel fast, but my question is this can i use tea during the fast?
Tea is one of the restricted items, simply because it is considered a "choice" food. The idea on the Daniel Fast is to eliminate commonly enjoyed foods as an act of worship and surrender to the Lord. That means giving up some luxuries, such as a daily cup of coffee or tea. It's important for us to have that sense of self denial. On the fast, the goal is to eat simply and to focus on drinking water. Thanks for your question!
When I looked at canned beans today, all but one had calcium chloride. My husband says that is a salt, not sure if that is ok or the ascorbic acid that was in so many canned foods as well. One or the other was also in all the canned tomatoes which may leave my list of options very short if those 2 things are not ok.
Is it ok 2 eat wheat bread???
Today is day one of the daniel fast for me. I am off today and decided to goggle the fast. Your blog came up and I have been reading away. I have been encouraged to do this. Most importantly I need to hear from God and sacrifing a few foods is worth it. Everytime I desire to eat the wrong thing, I will go and pray!
Whole wheat products are allowed, including bread. HOWEVER, the bread must be made without yeast or sugar (these are restricted on the fast). In other words, it needs to be unleavened bread, otherwise known as flatbread.

The goal on the DF is to eat as purely as possible, eliminating chemicals, additives, and preservatives. It would be great if we could all eat fresh produce and organic foods. However, that is not realistic, nor is it possible for most of us doing the fast. So, we need to use frozen and canned foods. You want to select products that have as few ingredients as possible (especially look for sugar content). Natural preservatives, such as citric acid, are allowed, as is calcium chloride. You're right. It would be nearly impossible to buy canned foods if not. I hope this helps!
